I love this and your photos. Strangely it's part of Italy I didn't love when I went a long long time ago - so this piece makes me want to go back and explore it again with fresh eyes and do more of the southern part of the island and the wine scene. We stayed in Palermo a few days, and visited Cefalu on a day trip (which I loved) but Palermo wasn't for me.
I can see how Palermo might not be for everyone, but there's sooooo much more to Sicily than Palermo. I think you should go back and give the island another chance!
We were based in CataniIa for a month a couple of years ago and fell head over heels with that city, Palermo, Taormina and Noto as you can read in the Nomad Foodies archive.
Planning our next visit in September arriving by train in Messina from Naples...
I love the article! I’m a dual citizen and spend half the year in NYC and the other half, mainly in Palermo. Sicily is such a special place.
I hope you’ll come and visit our site, Wisdom She Wrote. We are new to Substack and are in the process of migrating our catalog of work over from our website.
Palermo, Ortigia, Noto, Emma (for the nearby Roman villa restoration/ruin), Agrigento, and back to Palermo would be a great route. Next time I want to go to Marzamemi.
There are a ton of little beach clubs / stretches of sand in Reitani and San Lorenzo that are really beautiful. SL in particular can have really big operations with lines that can be kind of frustrating so maybe avoid the larger ones. If you head south I've stopped at BAIAMURI in between Pachino and Portopalo and had a great day there! I love Marzamemi and it's even had a glow-up in recent years... I just hope it doesn't get too overdone

I've never taken the train that crosses the Strait of Messina. That must be quite a unique experience!
We'll write about it for sure!
Ohh thank you for this newsletter issue!! Bookmarking it as I continue to plan my month in Sicily! :D

Grazie!
Thank you, hoping to go next year! My family is from outside Palermo.

The Villa Romana del Casale? Or is there another Roman villa?
I think that's the one.
My dad is from Marzamemi and it's the best little town!
Yes, I need to go back! What are your favorite beaches around there?
